Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Big Bang Theory

seems to have been the 4 nerds juxtaposed against the non-nerd "normal" world with their trials and pitfalls of life that so often considers them to be "odd". They just don't fit in. The centerpiece of this nerdness was Leonard's crush on the pretty girl that moves in the apartment across the hall. Ultimately Leonard not only gets together with the pretty waitress, but when they break up he hooks up with other women who based on their looks and his are far beyond what your average male nerd could ever hope for.
But the show seems to have moved its premise from the lovable nerds and their efforts in struggling to get along with the rest of everyday life to normalizing them as much as possiblepairing them up, having them get into relationships, and even having one of them become an astronaut. Through most of this, Sheldon remained the most steadfast nerdhe was what he was until he wasn't. As with the others the show just had to normalize him as wellto pair him up with a female and then to ultimately have sex, seeming to want to move him and the other nerds to become just like everyone else.
In the end the original premise of the show seems to have gone by the boards and what it is morphing into is just becoming another sitcom. How much longer can TBBT last as it is before if goes into a decline and the audience begins to fade?

Under the original premise, it would have lasted two seasons at best. The whole idea was to have these guys see outside of their safe worlds of academia, comic books, and action figures and for Penny to realize these guys can be as good of friends to her as anyone she had ever met. And that happened. So what do you do? Expand from there. It's not like the guys are dating supermodels: they are dating what is considered "sitcom hot." In other words the characters are totally attainable but the actresses playing them are ridiculously hot in real life. FAR, FAR from the first time a sitcom's done this.
The show was always about the characters themselves, not a show designed to showcase as many comic books, action figures, and sci-fi and science references as possible.

I believe Penny described herself at least twice, in terms of the acting roles she auditioned for and to the psychiatrist, as "girl-next-door hot. doable."

This show is just about characters being annoyed with one another. Got old.
