For the sake of a prominent house's survival. Not everyone needs to gun for the Iron Throne in this show.

Because people enjoy getting mad at things in advance, for some reason.

He is NOT going for the Throne. Someone does need to save House Baratheon, though. Gendry is the only person for the job, thanks to Stannis erasing his family.

Why does someone need to save House Baratheon? None of the people give a damn about House Baratheon. It will make no difference to the common people if the line completely dies out. They don't care about elite families. Most commoners would probably be Bernie voters.

They wouldn't vote for Bernie. I told you, they're most likely in an anarcho-syndicalist commune where people take it in turns to act as a sort of executive officer for the week. But all the decision of that officer must be approved at a bi-weekly meeting by a two-thirds majority in the case of purely internal affairs.

Nobody gives a fook what commoners think.
It isn't so much saving the blood of the Baratheons as preserving the blood of the Durrandons.

What do the commoner's opinion matter on Gendry being legitimized?
The Targaryens and Baratheons are descended from the same line of Aegon's blood, which could be pretty important to Dany and potentially even Jon, not to mention his father's relation to Gendry's.

Because he could claim the throne with enough backing. Like when a financial institution takes action in case a blonde or platinum blonde queen doesn't intend to stand for debts of a previous administration.

Legitimizing Gendry would be another chapter of this pitiful "Revenge of the Underdog" soap.
