The movie just ignored the virus aspect of the previous films and concentrated on them being super strength mutants.
Remember in the first movie how they’d spray or puke blood on people to infect them, or in the second one how the virus mutated to create asymptomatic carriers, it truly felt like a contagion. In this they’re just crazy nomads.
