Mason ended up being very flat and dull . I'm not sure if it was in his character description or the young actor turned out that why in real life and linklater was stuck with him . Although the kid deserves a hi five for scoring the hotty girlfriend who seemed to dig his lack of emotion .

Mason was dull to a lot of people because he didn't have a cruel streak to him like a lot of kids his age. And he was no pushover, either. He stood up to Jim and didn't fall for the girlfriend's berating of him.

I don't think he came across as gay; there is nothing at all wrong with being gay, he just didn't seem like that to me. I did think it was a believable performance as a contemporary teenage boy; he wasn't a bad kid, he was simply one living a normal suburban life.
