I loved how Ethan Hawks character actually turned out to be the man Patricia Arquette was looking for all along. But as Hawk said it " these things are all about timing" and the timing was never right. It took Hawk's character several more years to actually grow up, hold down a stable job and be a good family man.
There are a few scenes that stick out to me that makes me think the mom (Patricia Arquette) at least thinks about what "could have been" relating to Ethan Hawks character.- The first scene is when Mason Sr. shows up to pick up Mason and the sister Sam with his new wife and their new baby together. They drive off in a mini van and the mom sort of looks at the van like " man that could have been me and we could have had a nuclear family"
- The second scene is when Hawk gives the mom money at Mason's grad party. I feel like the director wanted to make us think that the mom was thinking about how much the dad has stepped up. I believe she was really thinking " maybe I wasn't patient enough with him or if only we waited to have kids my whole life could be different"
Just some thoughts anyone agree?
