We see 3 separate and mostly independent character schemes unfold in the season finale, all going down during the last hunt.
- Mari, Gen, Melissa, and Akilah hatch a plot to initiate another hunt in the first place. Akilah poisons her beloved animals to feign an omen showing the wilderness is displeased and thus need another hunt to satisfy it. This plot is clarified to be so Melissa can kill Shauna. Gen acts to disrupt the hunt by separating Shauna and Tai as well as possibly being the one to set decoy tracks around. Akilah meanwhile slips away to follow Lottie to the caves and confront her.
- Van and Taissa secretly plot to rig the card draw and give Hannah the Queen of hearts thus making her the victim of the hunt. Shauna sensing something is off intercepts this causing Mari to draw the Queen. This was not part of Gen,Mari,Akilah, and Melissa's plan…but all Mari would have to do is stay alive love enough for Shauna to die, making Shauna become the sacrifice while also ridding themselves of half (or a third depending on how you look at it) of their biggest dangers in the wilderness. Unfortunately Melissa loses her nerve. I have to imagine Shauna will have a major vendetta against all who crossed her that she knows of…Hannah, Natalie, Gen, Melissa, possibly others.
- Natalie and Hannah switch places. Sometime after both the hunt and the feast Natalie and Hannah switch places. This is a bit hard to pinpoint as they are both definitely present together along with the others for the feast and exiting the circle where the feast was held the following morning, but have switched places already by the time they walk back to camp…I'm wondering if this is a bit of an error on the production side though. In any case, due to this decoy Natalie is able to slip away unnoticed and reach the mountain top to contact rescue.
what I want to discuss most though is what happened to Akilah after confronting Lottie in the caves? Once there she does confront Lottie and accuses her of deceiving them all about the wilderness, Lottie in her usual way just continues to speak nonsense but Akilah picks up a large rock. As this scene ends we see Lottie turn away from Akilah as Akilah still holds the rock and stares at Lottie with contempt. The scene then cuts back to Mari running. Mari shortly runs directly into Lottie who has exited the caves and is still in the immediate area of both the caves and the pit…NOW, I noticed we never see Akilah again for the duration of the episode. Not after they all regroup at the pit to remove and butcher Mari, not at the feast, and not afterwards when the confrontation at camp happens before the end. So then, where is Akilah? They made a point to show us that scene between her and Lottie, and then Akilah is mysteriously gone. I think something went down in that cave and didn't go well for Akilah. We also see that Lottie has some kind of spool in her hand, with string/rope/sinew wrapped around it. The camera intentionally shows this, so I have to wonder what she was doing with it and what it was for. curious…

Lottie killed Akilah, no doubt. We'll see the details next season.
I mean, yeah, they could be playing with us, but usually on this show the misdirections turn out to be just that, and the most obvious theories turn out to be the truth. Mari being pit girl is the biggest example. -

This is what I'm kind of getting at…something definitely went down in the cave and only Lottie came back out. I actually re watched the episode and very carefully observed every girl's mask and clothing, and nope, we never see Akilah again after that scene in the cave.
