If he had tried to kill Aegon the dragon would have certainly eaten his ass because of the strong bond they share, which would have been hilarious because he is such a careful planner and wouldn't have considered that for some dumb reason.

Obviously.
He only stopped because he got caught by Criston Cole and wasn't certain he would have covered his ass. He probably figured Aegon would die from his horrific wounds so he backed off, otherwise he may have gone in for the kill anyway.
