Because there's a big difference between an independent film and a big-budget studio flick.

perhaps she was a victim of editing. whole subplots and actors roles have been edited out of films. and perhaps she got to keep her 15 seconds because of An Education. who knows?

Didn't she film her part just after An Education wrapped? She couldn't have known how popular An Education would eventually be. So at the time as a little known actress she was probably thrilled to be cast in a big American film with Johnny Depp regardless of how big or small the part was.

It may even have been shot before An Education. Or -right-, right after. Until An Education and The Greatest premiered at Sundance in early 2009, Carey Mulligan wasn't well known at all (except perhaps to devoted Doctor Who fans). So, as others have said, even a tiny role in a big-budget Michael Mann film with Johnny Depp and Christian Bale would have been nothing to sneeze at.
She also had a small role in Brothers, though this one at least a bit of dramatic weight and wasn't just "the adorable prostitute," lol.
Quasi-related anecdote: She came to Mark Romanek's attention for the lead in Never Let Me Go when a Fox Searchlight executive texted him, 'Cast the genius Mulligan' right after An Education's Sundance screening ended.

Honestly, I don't think Mulligan gave a damn how big the role was. She likely would have taken it even if she'd been given absolutely no lines. Most actors/actresses would kill just to be credited in a film like this. That's not to say it was necessarily an amazing movie, just that it was a very large, very well-known ensemble piece led by Johnny Depp. I don't care if Carey filmed this before "An Education", hell she could have done it after she received her Oscar nomination, and I still think she'd have taken it. I don't care if she received an Oscar nod every year for the past decadenot many people would turn down the opportunity to be in a film with Depp, especially one of this magnitude. I assume Carey was excited to just be a part of this cast. Most major actors/actresses have done at least one cameo in their career, and Mulligan can say that she made her first one opposite Johnny Depp. You get that opportunity, you only have to film for a day or two at the most (maybe even hours in some cases), and you get paid? I don't see the downside.

^^Agreed! I think she just wanted to be in the movie regardless of screentime. Sure, I wish that she was in the film a bit longer but she was good in what we saw.

You summed it up very well, writerchick. I am not sure why there is this expectation that actors would only do star turns once they've seen their own names in the papers. Even the Brad Pitts and Matt Damons have done little walk-on-walk-off roles long after their fame was secured. I can imagine myself doing the same had I been in the same fortunate situation - why not? I even think it's in many ways a noble thing to do.

Johnny himself has done that! 😉

She said on the Graham Norton show that she had a kissing scene with Depp. But it got edited out.

"An Education" only make $26 Million worldwide, that is nowhere close to be a hit.
