No mention of him at all.
The cast seems to change each series but they never mention where the characters went?

yeah Matt was shot and killed and replaced by Sam two series ago.
I don't recall anything happening to Sam at the end of the previous series, he has just vanished.

Can't remember if it was something about her moving and taking their son

That has always been typical of Law & Order, both the original and this one. Characters leave with hardly any explanation.

Wasn't there some sort of scandal involving a dead perp in the last episode with Sam in it? I think he was forced to resign because of it.
I could be wrong, though. My memory's not what it used to be.

No, there was never any reason given for him leaving. I prefer the new guy to Paul Nicholls, although Jamie Bamber was the best partner for Ronnie.

According to the
'official'
plot Sam (Paul Nicholls) is a part-time dad
and left to focus more on the upbringing of his child.
I like season 6+7 with Paul Nicholls.
The cases are more interesting.
