They specifically mention him 2-3 times. I was convinced, with no shortage of smug hubris i might add, that sarah and this 'chester' guy were involved. maybe it was inadvertent with herbut as the movie went on they kept mentioning chester. was that some kind of red herring or simply a dropped plot device?
it was the former, what was up with that email? they never even addressed why the dead ADA's boyfriend was emailing the DA, who he'd never met, documents that he someone figured out were important? seems like a dangling thread they forgot to resolve

I haven't seen the movie in a while but It was my understanding that Chester was the spy that told them about Clyde being the "brain"

Nope. that was the FBI agent from The Sopranos and he definitely wasn't named Chester in the movie, nor was he dating what's her name.

I think it was just a red herring.

Clyde himself disguised as the janitor and probably other aliases

Chester was Sarah's boyfriend, an unseen character.

Why ask when you know the answer?

really? i'm not asking who he was i'm asking what was his importance as part of the plot. i get that he was her boyfriend - but i didn't understand why they totally dropped the plot line. it was awkward.

They didn't drop the plot line at all. The unseen Chester was a deliberate plot device so that Sarah, even though she'd been murdered, could by her email to Nick be the instrument to bring the bad guy down. Nick underlines the point by saying 'Thank you, Sarah' after reading the email. I think it was neatly done by the writers.
