I have only left one movie before the end prior to this piece of cinematic trashTrue LiesAugust:Osage County was so bad I don't care how it endedI have not curiosity and could care less if the entire cast died in a house fire

Yes, it would be hard for some people to grasp. And it is unpleasant to watch.
You watch these sorts of movies for the sheer joy of watching talent. If you missed the scene of Streep telling about the Christmas boots, you missed some of the best acting ever.
But that's for us movie fans. We don't need car crashes or cgi ALL the time. -

Katharine Hepburn supposedly once privately criticized Meryl Streep's acting ability by saying she could always "see the wheels turning - click, click, click."
I always thought that was an unjust criticism.
Until I saw AUGUST: OSAGE COUNTY. -

Yes, Katherine Hepburn hated her, I thought it was probably jealousy, but then I started watching Meryl closer and Hepburn is right, she does have a repertoire of gimicky gestures and facial movements that I had never noticed before. She has certain hand movements that she uses over and over. I'm not calling her a bad actress, I generally enjoy her performances of which I think Iron Weed is her best ever. I won't stop watching her, and now that she's getting older and doing things she wouldn't have done before, it's better than the young twits that are out there today, but she's not the end all and Hepburn knew it. Was Hepburn the end all? I don't know, her stuff is hard to beat, but is she the greatest of all time? That answer is probably different for each movie goer.

Hepburn is not in any way better than Meryl Streep. Bette Davis was miles ahead of anything Hepburn ever could have done. Bette Davis named Meryl Streep her successor, and in my opinion - Meryl even surpassed her. Debatable, but please Hepburn is in no way on the same level or whom we should look to when you ask who Meryl's predecessor was - because it was truly Bette Davis.
Hepburn was a jealous, bitter woman to the grave. She rarely ever had anything nice to say about anyone. It would naturally be difficult for a full blown narcissist to have to watch as someone else who is younger and more talented take all of the attention. -

I was going to say the great Bette Davis as well. No other actress has ever had the same astonishing combination of whip-smart intelligence and depth (and striking looks, which she worked to great advantage she never lazily relied on looks like too many "beautiful" actresses tend to do. Grace Kelly was one of the most beautiful women ever, but her acting always seemed (a bit) lazy to me as she knew she was flawless). Now Voyager is just an incredible film. I also love Lillian Gish (and what a great pleasure it is to watch the two of them together in The Whales of August at the very end of their careers).
I also have started to find Meryl gimmicky it is like there is a mirror between her and the camera, whereas Davis was (is) always right there, so very present. And now when I watch some of Meryl's older stuff like Kramer vs. Kramer I notice the self-conscious qualities of her work, the nervous hand gestures, the same nervous, jittery, fluttery expressions.

You're right .. I've seen them over and over and through the years it has started to turn me off from watching movies with her in them .. I watched this movie this afternoon and I found myself looking away every time she did one .. I didn't know about Hepburn .

It wasn't so private. She was quoted saying that and it was in a biography about her. Funny how you mentioned that because a friend and I were just discussing that this evening. It's really hard to believe that Kate felt that way but I'm reckoning a lot of it had to do with Kate being one sort of actress and Meryl being another. I always like Kate though despite her opinion and you are right - it was unjust criticism.
That was all rather thrilling. Anything more cinematographic could scarcely be imagined. -

ummmm, I'm a movie fan and didn't love the movie either. the boot story wasn't even her best performance in the film.
With all the smoking going on, I debated stepping out to burn one, but stayed put
Best acting ever? Thats a bold statement, especially if you think this film is the tits. -

That's fine to go if you are a fan of studying acting but I go for story. I was with other people but had to get up a take a break for about half the film. Even with every star imaginable in it, I just could not stand the story, the mood or the characters. I leve performances by each of them in other movies but this was just too damn depressing and laborious to watch. The women I went with absolutely loved it and gushed about it all eveningthey loved Meryl and the arguments she would get in. Sorry, just not for me. I can take depressing ( Ordinary People is a good example) but there has to be a compelling story with it.

I didn't like the film very much at all, especially the histrionics of the Streep and Roberts characters. I hated all the shrieking they did. I know they were damaged women, but I just found them really hard-going and I wanted them to shut up. The only thing that rescued the film for me were the much quieter performances of Chris Cooper, Benedict Cumberbatch and Ewan McGregor. I also liked Julianne Nicholson's performance and I thought Margo Martindale was very good, too.

bpollen, I couldn't agree more with you about this movie. The cast was amazing!
I really enjoy movies where the actors actually ACT. N0 T&A, no cars blowing up
no gratuitous violence. A thinking persons movie.
