It sure is! Burton definitely decided on quite the dark take for Wednesday. He strayed extremely far from the original source material, much as he did with Dark Shadows, (which he butchered).
Wednesday wouldn't have this relationship with her mother, so Burton definitely deviated. Taken as a unique product, and watched on its own merit, it was a wild and crazy ride, that's for sure.

Directors deviating from source materials such as books and older films/tv series usually end in disaster but in this case, he made it work. (Dare I call it a miracle?) I was disappointed with some of the adaptations from Tim Burton such as Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Dark Shadows as you said, but I still enjoyed his work. To be honest, months before the release of Wednesday, I was sure it would suck, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Not yet. I'm working on it. I must find this mythical creature at all costs!
I hope a bear throw a book at you, moon at you, and do a tap dance wearing a thong and leather boots.
