On this day–1 March–in 1971, the official pilot for COLUMBO, "Ransom For A Dead Man," first aired on NBC. Peter Falk's Lt. Columbo, who concealed the mind of a brilliant detective behind a bumbling, shabby exterior, had first appeared in an earlier one-off tv movie, "Prescription: Murder." It was a good flick and a hit but Falk and the creators didn't quite have the character that would later emerge yet (among other things, Columbo loses his cool at one point–something the fully-mature Columbo almost never did). With "Ransom For A Dead Man," they have it all down to a science, and this is the version of the character that would, over the course of a 32-year run, become the icon.
