I'm sorry if this offends anyone, but it seems that Down syndrome and mental illness in general isolate people from mainstream society in some ways, from romance, from all the things people hope for in their own livesand thus, from the stories filmmakers draw us into, as well, hoping to strike a nerve.
Has there every been another romantic drama featuring a mentally handicapped or mentally ill character beforeother than, say, "Shine"? (I remember Christina Ricci in "Pumpkin" too, but that just offended people.)
This looks good. I can't wait to read the first reviews.

Mentally ill is not and has not EVER been even the slightest bit similiar or related to mental retardation. Fail.
Nice job basically calling tons of fully functioning, intelligent people who suffer from mental illness retarded. I myself suffer from clinical depression and I find your comments insulting, degrading, and shamelessly ignorant. Mental illness does not hinder one's intelligence. I was a honour student through high school and was accepted with honours to university.

Hey hey now to everlight or something. Don 't be so hard on homer, I suffer from depression but sometimes i think it's a totally different case. I'm not offended by homer either. I did feel slightly, just a tiny bit offended by the movie though, lol! Well I think, I thought I heard the young man who is in love with Candy worked in a deli or something. If that is the case then here is what I have to say:
Personally, I work in a deli and usually a general deli environment isn't safe for many who are, well, in a delicate state like depicted in the film. People who work behind a deli counter must be required to lift heavy machinery and trained to use sharp tools like slicers and knives. There are light tasks like cleaning and customer service but that is not the case. If there is an accident where a machine fell on a worker, the other deli personnel have to assist immediatly.
In the story, they could have gone with another career. Anyway so far it looks like a good movie.
