I see it more as performative (sociological and existentialist). Your blocking someone shows up when you look at their profile. There's no other way to know if someone is actually blocking another person or not. So it's a public statement that you find the blockee loathsome/boring/intimidating/illiterate. So you can block, but also read the other's posts if you are so inclined.
