How important is the power struggle on message boards?

Someone I don't know called Margo something raised this question rather ineptly and then vanished. It's an interesting question, though.
Why can't this message board be a place for friendly conversations about film and so on? Is Jacky (in her unusual incarnation as St Teresa of Avilion) right to argue that there's too much nastiness and vindictive back-stabbing going on?
Why is there a power struggle? Is it necessary? Or is it mainly the male trolls doing their usual testosterone-fuelled dick-measuring?
Or is the struggle fun and necessary? You know, a Darwinian struggle for survival? -

The movie fans just have to post more and ignore the drama. I do.
The one thing that would help is if those in charge don't move posts elsewhere, usually under "Classic Films" while some new piece of **** made can stay in the category it was created in, as well as some ****ty movie made 10 years ago. And many movies I love from the 30-70s aren't even considered classics. Hell, some of them aren't even considered cult. I watched one recently that had less than 100 votes on IMDB!

An excellent response! Ignore the rubbishy threads and go ahead with your passion. I like it!
Though that does rather ignore the whole "feel of the board" element. If it doesn't feel like a movie-friendly board you may not get enough passionate posters. Not to mention you have trolls coming into your threads and disrupting them. Or does that not happen? -

Thanks

I just edited/added some more stuff, just so you know, lol.

I've hardly ever had trolls interrupt my many movie threads, so I think there is a nice separation between those who want to argue, and those who want to discuss. And for the one or two who do make ignorant comments, I ignore them, but I also think, "Well, thanks for bumping up my thread".

Is there power to be had on a forum? I suppose the moderators have a modicum of it, but even that vanishes once the users log out for the night.
There's too much nastiness going on in the world at large. It's hard to see others so continually upset, be it online or offline. The new normal is a stressful one, so it's understandable to be stressed or more easily irritated, but it's so much more rewarding to uplift than to tear down.
Maybe I'm just too much of an insufferable bleeding heart. There is joy in debate, too, surely, but only when it's productive. Nobody should have to go to bed hurt.

Hmmmm. First off, I'd say there
is
power to be had on a forum, but of a very specific type. People who are verbally skilled will have power in the real world, so the forum both reflects that power and reassures those that have it that they have it (assuming they need reassurance).
About the nastiness in the real world, I agree, but speaking for myself, I grew accustomed years ago to enjoying the fights on message boards, and I find it difficult to imagine a message board without some degree of
agon
. Having said that, I enjoy a mix of scrapping with insolent newcomers and civilized debate (which is precisely what seems to come my way). -

It definitely seems to be a skill, to enjoy the fighting. I like a good scrap myself, when I'm partaking in it, but it is unfortunate to see people being dogpiled. Sometimes, it's deserved, but mostly it simply makes the dogpiled user lash out in defence of themselves, which causes them to dig themselves deeper.
This board seems to do very well in keeping a healthy mix; fights never last long. In the old days of the Soapbox, fights sometimes led to jobs and families being contacted. It was a real threat to have someone dislike you.

It happened occasionally on GoT board too and mostly hungry was responsible for the majority of doxxing on there. I always hated it and he tried it with me too. Good thing is, he's like 5,000 km away from doxxing me ever
but he made a couple of innocent posters leave the boards forever terrified.
suck it. -

Well, yes, TWD board is quite civilized. We've never had much doxxing, and a lot of us really like each other. Most of the serious fights were with posters from other boards, or with self-appointed board enemies like Shredder. And then there were the legendary Bongo-VHS battles, which went on for years!

Right and as much as i fight online and always have been för years i actually never went to bed hurt bc after i log off and turn off my device everything happened online that day or ever is magically forgotten and null and void. Its just hard to turn off, thats when the message board addiction comes into that. But yeah i was never so hurt by anything happened online that i took it into bed with me. Lol

I'd say so. Depending on what kind of poster you are. There's a certain power in being able to manipulate posters into doing your bidding. Or even just being respected enough that people will do what you want because they want to impress you. There's also a certain power in being able to control the narrative of the board by PMing the right people and developing the right hive mind thinking. One could argue that deleting a few posts here and there is the least form of power this place offers. As great as they are, thirsty and Twiz don't strike me as powerful posters.

I agree with you on this. But I will say, I really don't see how anybody could take anything here personally no matter how low of a blow it was. That's e-stuff I'm referring to. Not irl stuff obviously. Irl stuff is different. -

There's a fair amount of truth in that. Influential people will influence. I suppose it doesn't matter which medium is used to reach others. The charismatic will always attract followers.
Of course. It is easy to laugh things off when interactions are limited to the Internet realm, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit that being attacked here after having a particularly terrible day never does much for my mood. It's not so much what's said as it is the fact of it being an unpleasant breed of energy expenditure. It's the small things that really push people over the line. I know we aren't known for being a pleasant place, but we also never know what someone is dealing with in their real lives.

That's certainly true. If it's any consolation, since my return I've limited my trolling to other trolls only and made it a habit to be nicer to posters who don't really troll at all. Like Annamaria, Steve Lake and Juan Kerr for example. Perhaps one day I'll leave trolling behind all together. It's a peculiar hobby to say the least and I'm sure a psychologist will one day tell me just why I so heavily gravitate towards it.
