What errands was Horatio running when Penny returned?

I think he wasn't running errands at all.
He was so excited that penny was here but also wanted to be clever and interesting to impress her. So he said a quick hello (because he couldn't help himself) and lied to buy some time. He's been crouched over a yellow legal pad, writing down ideas for posts ever since. Everything is scratched out except "dump architect?'
And now you've called him out.
