What was the point?

Was there a point to the "harness" thing or whatever Matt Damon was wearing? It was supposed to make him strong but there wasn't a whole lot of utilization of it. It seemed pretty worthless to me. Just looked cool on the cover and in the trailers but to me it seemed like the movie could've done without it.

Actually, there were a few times it came in handy. For example, when he wrestled the droid (from the downed transport) and ripped its head off and when he tore back the side of the transport he was in when it crashed. But, I agree with the prior post about the suit allowing him to overcome his radiation poisoning.

The machine doesn't make noises or change colors when it's being used, so it may not have been obvious when it was important. Here's some uses of the exoskeleton off the top of my head.
Tearing off the robots head during the first hijack. Tearing the car door open when it gets flipped on him. Defending himself against Kruger's sword attacks. Being able to fight Kruger at Elysium when they both had exoskeletons on. Being able to function with all the radioactive poisoning. The hand to hand battle in the armory when he tossed the guy across the room. I think the suits computer also allowed for the data transfer which was the key to overthrowing Elysium.
So the suit might not make him fly or fire rockets but it was still very critical to him succeeding in his mission.
