Many of Phillips crewmembers, some of whom are in the midst of a lawsuit they filed against the ships owners, claim his account misrepresents the story. According to them, Phillips behaved irresponsibly: They say he ignored warnings about pirates in the area and sailed too close to the Somali coast. One of Phillips crew, a man who goes by the name ATM, has also claimed that he alerted Phillips to the pirates only to have Phillips dismiss him: I told him, Captain, Im damn sure this is pirate boat, ATM has said. He laughed at me. He told me it could be a fishing boat. He walked away from me. Phillips denies this. In a new documentary, Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse, the head hijacker played in the movie by Barkhad Abdi, also claims that his story hasnt been told.
As in the movie, Phillips received bulletins about recent hijackings in the surrounding waters but chose to keep his course. The Alabama sailed 300 to 400 miles from the Somali coast, in order to maintain a faster, more direct route, even though at least one warning cautioned that vessels should consider maintaining a distance of more than 600 miles from Somalia coastline. Most of the warnings were directed at all the ships in the area, but one was sent directly to Phillips. Unlike in the movie, Phillips didnt hide the surrounding hijackings from his wife, Andrea, according to the book.

Trivia
"The crew members locked themselves in the 130 degree engine room. Chief Engineer Mike Perry ambushed one pirate with a pocket knife and took him hostage for 12 hours.
The lead pirate Abduwali Muse (played by Barkhad Abdi in the film) boarded the USS Bainbridge to address a wound he had received during the takeover of the Maersk, and begin negotiations for Phillips.
Head pirate Muse was arrested aboard the Bainbridge. His parents pleaded for leniency stating that he was only 16 at the time of the kidnapping. A court ruled that he was not a juvenile and sentenced him to 33 years in prison.
A second unsuccessful hijacking attempt on the Maersk happened that same year. At 6:30 am on November 18, 2009, the Maersk Alabama was reportedly sailing some 350 nautical miles east of Somalia when it was fired upon by four pirates wielding automatic weapons and traveling in a skiff. The assault failed after guards on the ship responded with small arms fire and acoustical weapons. Afterward, a Djibouti-based patrol plane flew to the scene and an EU ship searched the area. Attempts to take the Maersk have failed 3 more times since the Captain Phillips event.

Capt Phillip's Ignored Warnings and May Have Placed Crew in More Dan
An earthshakingly original post, which is actually addressed in the movie with the Captain and the crew having a heated discussion about the route being taken and the Captain exerting his authority on insisting the route be maintained with the consequences we see being played out in the film. So big deal!
In a new documentary, Abduwali Abdukhadir Muse, the head hijacker played in the movie by Barkhad Abdi, also claims that his story hasnt been told.
Well of course the crim would. He's clearly been "sadly maligned" in the movie and was really a humanist trying to do the right thing by his poor Somali village.
Unlike in the movie, Phillips didnt hide the surrounding hijackings from his wife, Andrea, according to the book.
Another incredibly important reason people should treat this non-documentary with caution.
