didn't they have armed security on board and/or some kind of patrol at sea? Like Maersk can't afford it's own at sea security?

You are only like the 4582nd idiot to ask the same question, repeatedly.
You are not an idiot for not knowing the answer to the question, which is understandable.
You are an idiot for asking the same question for the 4582nd time when it has been answered repeatedly.
Commercial shipping pulls into numerous countries all over the world. Each of thee country's ports have different laws regarding weapons and armed security.
What may be legal in one nation's port, is illegal in another.
Between that, and the Insurance concerns regarding weapons and armed security aboard merchant ships almost no Merchants are armed.
Only in recent times (After the events in this film) were laws and treaties coming into effect that allowed for Merchants to either have weapons aboard, or trained armed security.
Next time, look at the threads and see if your question has already been asked and answered before reposting.

Don't take it too personally. CG is pretty much a dick to everyone. Whatever it takes to feel important, I guess

Wow. Did you have to call me an idiot?
Look Lisa I know that CGSailor alienates A LOT of people on IMDB boards with his replies but I am with him this time on your question. Like he said he called you an "idiot" NOT "for not knowing the answer to the question, which is understandable" but because of "your asking the same question for the 4582nd time when it has been answered repeatedly".
Instead of scrolling down the Board page where there are about 4-5 Threads discussing the same question like
Seriously, U.S. Merchant Marines should at least to the extent be armed.
you start another one. Also IMPORTANTLY your particular question is in the
              Frequently Asked Questions
              and answered sufficiently.
Also from a Common Sense POV the crew aboard the massive MV Maersk Alabama are engineers, mechanics, cooks etc not ex soldiers nor trained with weapons. You can't simply take them to the gun range one day/week and arm them with M4s so they can get into a firefight with Somali pirates high on Khat, shooting at you with AK-47s and sometimes RPG-7s hoping they give up and turn around.
Also if the crew did have firearms on board they would also have to be TACTICALLY trained to shoot, manoeuvre and use cover and concealment aboard a Merchant Vessel not a Warship!
You really want to arm the MV and dissuade pirates put FOUR M2 .50 Cal machine guns aboard each corner of the ship to lay down warning shots and/or suppressive fire to approaching pirate skiffs. Sounds easy? Then who comes up with the Rules of Engagement of the MV crew with a pirate skiff coming at them? How close do they have to be to open fire? Do they have to be fired upon first? How many warning shots have to be fired before engagement? When can they start firing DIRECTLY at the fully armed crew aboard the approaching skiff? All of this in International Waters!
The MV Maersk Alabama crew relied on non-lethal countermeasures such as the high pressure hoses trying to sink the small skiff, counter manoeuvres such has speeding up the ship and deliberately turning it into the pirates small skiff. Also the cage gates with a simple padlock stopping them from reaching the Bridge were easily shot apart with a burst of a AK fire (yes a AK 7.62mm round will break a palm sized padlock)!
Also some countries can prosecute some ship crews with international gun smuggling charges when the MERCHANT VESSEL is only carrying firearms/weapons aboard regardless of whether they are for SELF DEFENCE ONLY!
If you are not willing to give up everything, you have already lost
