They really were, and anybody who was a kid in the 1970s , especially the late 1970s, and saw close encounters in the movie theatre when it came out , and wore sued Pumas, and saw Star Wars in the theatre in the summer, and waited on line wilting in the heat, and read the sunday comics on shag carpeting while listening to the bee gees , and wore silk shirts, in a much smaller much cooler world, where a kid could spend a summer day all on his own, and come home when it was already dark and nobody every worried about anything or anyone-were very lucky indeed.

Even that's not completely true, with the "don't ask don't tell" attitude, and rampant child abuse which seems to have been ignored or swept under the carpet from that period, which is only just coming out.
Things were certainly "less complicated" in Northern Ireland, Vietnam, China, South America, and for the vast majority of the human race.

There's just something about growing up in the seventies that was so much fun. I was born in 1970 and grew up with everything the original poster mentioned. It was something special. And to be fair I played video games but sure spent a lot of my time just running around with friends.

Yeah, the Irish troubles, the Lebanon War, the whole of South America run by dictatorships with thousands of people disappearing forever, strikes in most western countries, the Vietnam War, the horrific price of fuel in the USA causing massive knock-on effects etc etc

Anyone who defines their past by commercial products is pretty moronic anyway. That's not how they were for most people. We seriously thought that there was going to be a nuclear war at any time. That's not something I miss.

When your of an age 1 to 10 you don't think of those things. Every decade has terrible things that happen, I was a kid so when I look back to the 70's I don't look at the bad. I have a true fondness for growing up in the country where I grew up in the states.

If your dad loses his job, or is on strike, you're fairly aware of it at an early age. I think a lot of the children in Northern Ireland were aware of violence and the military from the age of five, maybe earlier.
Certainly at eight or nine, I was aware of the possibility of nuclear war from programs, films and books that I'd read.

From some posts on here, it looks like not everyone had the same experiences in the 70's.
Maybe you should amend it to just kids in America growing up in the 70's?
