In a weird way this move made me think of SBM. Mainly because of the kids. The friendship (not including the female character), but how they interacted with each other, how they were annoying, talking over each other, one of them was chubby, another was slightly unhinged, the male lead suffered a loss like in SBM, dysfunctional parents, small town

Yes I got a Stand By Me vibe from it right from the start, for the same reasons. Also, cute small-town America.
