Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Dual Survival

Jeff Zausch in 905 Blackout: "When the water drips on the calcium carbide, it produces argon gas, which is very flammable."
Sorry Jeff. Not only is argon not produced when water drips on calcium carbide, it is an inert gas that is absolutely not flammable. Acetylene is produced in calcium carbide lamps.
Just another little thing that would have been so easy to fact-check. Or maybe they did and Discovery figures it isn't worth going back to correct. They just don't care whether what they are showing has any basis in reality.
IMO, this show has degraded to the level of E.J. and Jeff's stomping grounds - Naked & Afraid. It is now worthless as a source of survival facts. Sad compared to the days of Cody and Dave.

      Dual Survival
is greatly staged as evidenced in the recent Georgian cave episode. Obviously, the cave was thoroughly scouted by the production crew to ensure Jeff and E.J. would not be in danger of falling to their deaths. The chance of getting out of a cave without a light source is about the same as winning the Powerball lottery - twice! The chance of happening upon two (2) working carbide lamps deep in some random cave (and in the dark) is equally remote. Jeff and E.J. were specifically brought to that location within the cave (by the production crew) and therefore knew which direction to travel to get out (and where to find the carbide lights the production crew planted).
      Dual Survival
is just another fictitious reality show.

Of course. I just can't stand to take seriously the show anymore. I still watch because it is interesting but nothing seems real. The chance of finding a carbide lamp - zero !

        Yes, unfortunately.

This is true, but to be fair, every episode since the beginning has had them "finding" a resource at the start of the show, rather than them just having it from the open.
It's always been a backpack, vehicle, rifle, etc that they "find."
At least this show has always had the disclaimer that "situations are presented to demonstrate survival techniques" or some such.
I always thought it was always clear that this wasn't actual survival, but rather survival demonstration.

No way this show is going to let its stars run around in an unexplored cave with no light source. Yeah, it's obviously all set up.
That doesn't bother me though. It's just this show has been boring me ever since they brought those Naked and Afraid guys in. Maybe they just get along too well, I don't know. Didn't think I'd ever say it, but I miss the military/hippie pairings.

I'm not exactly sure what it is about these guys, but I agree. This board seems to agree also. Traffiic has dropped way off.
I think the problem is these guys know they are actors, not suvivalists, and they are just
              terrible
actors. Nothing they do has any credibility.
I suppose the military/hippie duos were more sincere. They actually believed their own opinions. At least some of the time.

Yeah, the new episode last night was followed by an "enhanced" rerun of the first episode with Cody and Dave. That rerun was so much more interesting than the new episode, there's no comparison.
Cody and Dave seemed very invested in what they did, and they brought some ego to it. They cared about what they were doing, and you could see that they wanted to show their stuff, and that sometimes caused friction. Cody had his weird shorts and barefoot thing going on, but he had his reasons for it, and seemed to have something to prove. He was proud of his reflective greenhouse shelter and wanted to show Dave how warm it could be. And Dave wanted to impress Cody with his hunting skill by bagging the porcupine. You could see these guys were passionate about what they were doing.
In contrast, the new guys just seem to be going through the motions and doing whatever the producers tell them. I don't know if that's true or not, but that's the impression that's left.

I love how Jeff and E.J. ALWAYS have a 'disagreement' in every episode - usually at the beginning. Of course, that's all staged (i.e. venture into the jungle in late afternoon vs. staying and building a shelter; staying by the bear tracks along the river vs. finding higher ground away from game trails). You can tell the disagreement isn't genuine. Unfortunately for E.J. and Jeff, the one who presents the really stupid idea also looks stupid in the process.
