Jesse's character was already irritating me on the lead-up to this scene, but the way this played out just infuriated me. Dude, either you're cool with the age difference or you're not. Don't build up a relationship for weeks/months, go see her, then shoot her down the moment she puts her cards on the table. That's a dick move right there. No girl should have to put up with that beep
For me, irrational behaviour like this killed the whole movie for me. Don't get me wrong. I get it. Movies need to have ups and downs, but when characters start acting in an irrational manner even within the context of the movie, that's just bad writing imo. This movie could have been so much better. What a letdown.

This movie makes us 28-37 yos feel like we have one foot in the grave lol. I have to look at Johnny Depp and Amber Heard to get the taste of it out of my mouth. But I think this was a been there done that kinda deal for him, and he was looking to move forward in his life instead of giving in to nostalgia.

Yeah, I'm 35 too and it was like, "This guy's ancient" I liked the movie and still thought the point was overcooked, especially in a time when 90-year-olds are hitting the gym. Jesus.

Well, I'm in my 50's. I liked the movie very much. But part of me did feel a little like this guy ain't seen nothing yet as aging issues go! Still, it's an interesting meditation on a relatively young guy coming into his own as a more mature adult.

Couldn't agree more. He'd built up the relationship with her up for months with pen-pal letters with an intention of being right where he was, only to suddenly start getting all neurotic when she tells him she's a virgin. His decision to leave her alone and heartbroken in that moment defies logic, reason and sanity.
I wonder whether this is an American mentality to sex but I'm trying to consider a movie where a European guy runs out of the room hysterical when a beautiful and mature 19-year old propositions him for sex.
"Please don't eat me! I have a wife and kids. Eat them!"

It was the only bad scene in the movie. If anything it showed him behaving MORE like the person he was trying not to be by pulling a bait-and-switch. But he thought he was making the right decision for where he was at in his life, anyway. Still weird.

                "suddenly start getting all neurotic"
There is nothing at all sudden about it. The entire movie is filled with huge clues to tell you he is hesitant to embark upon this relationship, even throughout his visit to her.
It was her Gentleman Caller letter that sets things off. Before that he may never have thought to see har again.

Interesting to read the posts from people who felt that way. It really didn't strike me that way at all. Jesse was struggling with the age difference. He thought he was okay with it first, but then when it came down to the wire he realized he didn't feel right about it. Human beings are like that. We're not always certain about things from the beginning then it may take us a while to find out. Our feelings evolve.
I know it was hard on Zibby and I felt bad for her, but that's life. She took that risk when she got involved in a prospective new relationship, as we all do. Better that than for her to get deeper in with Jesse then get hurt even worse later. Jesse was a big enough man to stop himself from doing something he wouldn't feel right about later.

I think it was more about it being her first time. Not only was he older, but he'd be her first sexual experience. To him, that was probably a lot of pressure.
