I'm watching the scene even as I type and, while I agree that it presents some redemptive qualities, and that Janney is competent in her delivery, the only talent in this horrendous travesty is Richard Jenkins. Apologies in advance.

Ugh - I despised her character so much. I don't normally say this about females or female characters, but she was such a dick lol So unlikeable. I don't condone violence towards women in any way, but if she said the things to me she said to Jesse, welllets just say its a good thing I'm not a violent person. That I'm a "sensitive, effete man-boy" or whatever judgmental crap she said. Totally deserved Jesse flipping her offserved her rightI was doing it right there with him lol
Can't stand that type of person. I've dealt with enough of them in my life and I see them all the time on these internet boards. Acting like little pretentious, Social Darwinist, cynical, detached hardasses. Sorry, not all guys can be Hemingway lol Some of us guys are sensitive, feel emotions, andgaspwe're ok with that!!! 🙂 Even older guys!!! Even straight guys!!! It doesn't mean we're stunted. Its ok to not be logical all the time. We're human, not robots or Vulcans lol Being in touch with your "feminine side" (though I don't really believe in sides, people should just be themselves) isn't a bad thing. It isn't "weak". We are who we are! Not everyone has to be the same. Maybe we don't want to grow a thicker skin and turn into complete dicks just to cope with the world. Just because you had to become that way and lose your innocence and goodness, don't try to ruin life for the rest of us and sink us down to your level. If that's what being "grown-up" looks like, then no thanks.
Sorry, just had to get that off my chest 🙂 You'd think, by 2014, people would be a little more tolerant, especially a supposedly "mature", educated, enlightened college professor like her. Surprised to not see any topics here about how unlikeable she was. So maybe its just me who feels that way. So be it. You have to take a stand for something in this life.
Since then, I've seen Allison Janney in many other roles and I've come to really appreciate her as an actress. Guess I just never noticed her before. Though I'll always compare her to this role and those emotions she stirred in me. Had no sexual desire for her characterand that's just as much based on her personality as her being so much older than Jesse/me (we're about the same age). Zibby was a much better fit for Jesse, social taboos or not. The heart wants what it wants. Don't get me wrong, this post was not an attack on Allison as a person or on her acting skills at all. Some characters just reallyumaffect you. I'll be nice and leave it at that (after my longwinded rant) 😉

I hear you, SilentLaughter. The character is vicious and cold, but that's what makes her so interesting. Like Jesse says, the irony of a professor of romantics, someone who so inspired him to love and appreciate fine literature, turning out to be such a cold-hearted bitch. As a teacher she inspired such warmth and love of art that she's remembered as his favorite teacher. The reality: she's a burned-out shell of the person he's built up in his mind.
She confesses loving teaching. And hopefully that remains. But she's a realist. Probably had her "gooey" heart squashed one time too many. She uses boys/men attracted to her perceived charms, then tosses them away before they can hurt her. Sadly, a part of human nature.

And that's why it shows that he was right not to sleep with Zibby. He knew that she had certain expectations and he knew that no matter what happened, she eventually would be incredibly disappointed; the fact that she couldn't emotionally handle what she perceived as his rejection of her. Then he slept with his ex-professor, but this time
                he
is the one who went in with certain expectations, only to be disappointed in the end. The difference is that he handled it better than Zibby did.

For me it was the one scene that almost ruined the movie for me.
Her character is a bit too pat. Sorry, COMPLETELY too pat. It took an hour to remove the sledgehammer from my skull after seeing it.
But, except for that, I absolutely LOVED the film.
