Maybe I missed something but they do not explain how The Riddler is so smart at everything and always one step ahead, yet he managed to get caught so easily. Did I miss something?

That's neither a plot hole, nor an inconsistency. He's caught because he has other smart people after him as well. Plus, kind of like The Joker in the Dark Knight, he seemed to want to be caught.
So many stories, so little time.
