Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — SOMM

    Brisk317 — 12 years ago(January 13, 2014 10:13 AM)

The film should have ended with Ian failing the exam and walking alone through the vineyard. It would have emphasised how hard the exam is; that the guy who was shown studying the most and who seemed the most dedicated to passing wasn't able to.
Instead, they attached an update showing him passing the exam a year later and to me it absolutely lessened the significance of the exam they were buidling up to for the whole film.
Also, on a different topic, I kind of feel like there should be an experience restriction on being a Master Somm, something like having worked in the wine industry for 20 years or so to qualifiy to take the test. Because it seemed to me these guys who appear in their mid 20's and maybe early 30's were just cramming knowledge that would be learned over time just so they could get the distinction to further their careers. We all know from college that short-term memorization doesn't retain with you. You just fill your mind to pass an exam and like they said "we're going to have a flash card bonfire". A dedicated person can force themselves to remember certain things about any subject but I wouldn't necessary consider them a master on the subject.
And another thing, shouldn't a Master Somm have to go 6 for 6 on the tasting portion? It seems when they were talking about their picks they differed but yet both of them became Master Somms.

Only 200 people have ever passed the test in the 40 years it has existed and you think they need to put up more barriers?
      Yeahgreat idea.

I thought about the cramming, too, but remember one of the guys who got it said that afterward, a master somm has to study further, and always be on top of info, trends, innovations, competitors. So, it's not just cramming and then forgetting.

          My thoughts exactly.
There was so much build up to the final exam, and the heartbreak of those who didn't pass. Then 2 minutes later, everyone's a winner.
The doc definitely lost some of its impact by the weak ending.

Like the whole thing should be taking seriously. Who in the wine industry has ever heard of these guys? Would Robert Parker be impressed if you came flashing a 'Master Sommelier' diploma issued by no one really, on his face? Would Michel Rolland be? I don't think so.
