Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Arrival

Just got back from watching Arrival at the cinema. I was excited to see
this and wanted to be immersed in a good film. However, this fell apart
as it went on and I couldn't wait for the credits so I could leave.
Not a hater and for those that loved it I wish I was part of your
ranks. I've enjoyed some of the directors previous films but this was a
mess. Excellent first 30-50 mins then heavy handed and boring
exposition. Long dramatic close-ups and flash backs spiced up with
    dreamy sequences.

Not going to imply anything. But this film is very intelligent. And only if you manage to break down the pieces you can fully understand the film. I'm not saying you are not able to do that, you might not have tried.
Because this movie is definitely not a mess, i can tell you that for sure. It does however portrait complex science and our understanding of time and space as a whole. Einstein was the first person with the idea that time does not exist, he broke it down into time and space, called spacetime.
The human brain is designed to follow time, in a linear pattern, only this way does it makes sense. You have action, then reaction. Your actions have consequences. But as Einstein already told us over 100 years ago, time is relative to speed, space, gravity and the observer.
When you understand this, that time is just a "thing" our brain has come up with to make sense of everything, then you will start to see what this film is portraying.

This movie is not particularly intelligent or original. You have a very silly understanding of Einstein's relativity if you think causal violations (effect before cause) are an important consequence of the theory. In fact, as Einstein would have told you, there are no causal violations in relativistic space-time unless you introduce very exotic mathematical structures called traversable wormholes. These are massive high energy constructions like black holes, are highly theoretical, they have never been observed, and certainly cannot form inside a human brain by learning a new language.
What is important in relativity is the concept of simultaneity, which varies according to observer, but in general there is no observation of causality violations.
So the main premise of the film, that aliens could teach humans a new language and enable them to see the future before it happens is just silly, you need to assume magic like in a Harry Potter movie.

Convoluted? Really? I didn't find it hard to follow at all.
              Hail to the king, baby.
