So far on this board, only one name has come up as far as speculative casting: Colm Meany for Captain Francis Rawdon Moira Crozier. He is Irish, a very fine actor, has a working-class look that seems to fit into any time period, and actually bears a rather striking resemblance to photos of the man himself. Any other casting ideas out there?

I always pcitured Titus Welliver for Crozier when reading it. Even though it doesn't match the real picture of a young Crozier as well as yours but the trip changed Crozier physically drastically anyways.

Hmmm. . . Interesting. Honestly, I think that as I read, I didn't so much picture Colm Meaney as some kind of melding of him with Gregory Peck and James Mason!
Titus Welliver. He's great and a bit of a chameleon. He might make a pretty awesome Blanky, acktually, the tough-as-nails Ice Master that just . . . keeps. . . going.
Any ideas for Hickey or Magnus Manson? I think Manson is going to be a tough one to cast. -

Hickey and Manson are kind of hard. I have the perfect mental image but, who matches it isn't as easy.
Hickey could be Clint Howard or Robert Carlyle maybe.
Manson - Always pictured a white Micheal Clarke Duncan haha. I don't recall if Mansons age was mentioned by maybe Allan Graf who played Captain Turner on Deadwood. Shave his head, get rid of the mustache.
On that note a lot of Deadwood actors would fit right in here.
I think Blanky was older, wasn't he? I got the impression he was a Brian Cox type.- C.Y.

Robert Carlyle would be GREAT as Hickey! Manson is definitely a tough one. Somebody big and relatively handsome, that can do stupid. Blanky is older, but considering the short life expectancy of an arctic explorer, I think that Titus Welliver would be within the range.

Remember also, that Blanky needs to be fit enough to believably leap from mast to spars to dangling ropes like Errol Flynn during his first encounter with the Tuunbaq. One of my favorite scenes in the novel.

i don't like it. i mean i like Brian Cox, but not as Franklin. Franklin was a fool (in the book). i like Colin Firth as Fitzjames. shoot you could make him Crozier if Colm Meaney isn't suitable. what about Tom Felton as Hickey? maybe typecasting sure. that dude can play nasty though. Jay Baruchel as Harry Goodsir. liked him in the book. Goodsir that is. i guess you could get that girl from The New World to play Lady Silence, or maybe Mizuo Peck from the Night at the Museum movies. i'd cast Bob Hoskins as Blankyif he were about 10-15 years younger. that's it for now.

I agree with the casting of Robert Carlyle! Huge fan of the independent film Ravenous(he was a blood thirsty two-faced creep), as well as Trainspotting where Robert was 'slightly' off his rocker as Begby.

Richard Brake as Hickey! He just seems like a good two-faced scrawny weasel. Creepy as well.if you remember the naked dance scene on the ice as a lure! He was one of the kidnappers in Hannibal Rising(under
the radar)..OR(slightly older) Willem Dafoe! -

Liam Neeson as Sir John Franklin.
James Nesbitt as Francis Crozier.
Ioan Gruffud as James Fitzjames.
Lee Inglby as Lt. Graham Gore.
Alex Russell as Lt. John Irving.
Toby Jones as James Reid.
Sean Harris as Thomas Blanky.
Stephen Waltersanother one of the bad guys from Hannibal Risingwould be my choice to play Cornelius Hickey.
Can't think of anyone for Magnus Manson.
