Did Elias kill Lukas? Think about it, Elias is thoroughly deranged and essentially fits all the hallmarks of a young psychopath. He kills animals for fun (the cat), destroys property, obsessed with fire, creates crossbow bolts out of common household items, collects insects, is curious about torture, but not so much about the consequences, doesn't show any feelings of guilt, continuously breaks all of his mothers rules, outwardly mocks his mother whenever they're having a serious conversation (using a book burning joke, how many children use dark humor correctly?) Now, alone this could simply be ascribed to the curiosity of children, but he kills his mother near the end of the movie without much of an emotional reaction and this leads one to question his earlier actions even more.
His mother points out the dead of Lukas wasn't really Elias' fault, which means Elias had directly something to do with the dead of his twin brother. His mother and father may have even separated over the issue of their sons' dead. One child intentionally drowning another child is very hard to prove, after all.
This is purely speculation of course, but Elias' behaviour doesn't sit well with me. It doesn't seem natural even for someone hiding a lot of grief and guilt.
Anyway, the movie reminded of "We need to talk about Kevin", but I honestly didn't expect Lucas to kill his mom despite his disturbing lack of empathy.

      No.
      Elias is messed up
      because
      his brother died.
Furthermore, he didn't kill the cat. The cat died of natural causes, it was already old/sick, and that is why it was alone in the cave in the first place, animals tend to get away from everything and everyone to die alone.
His mother points out the dead of Lukas wasn't really Elias' fault, which means Elias had directly something to do with the dead of his twin brother.
No, Elias simply feels guilty, and that's what she's referring to. It wasn't his fault therefore he has no need to feel bad about it. Or, he was present and coudn't do anything to help him and that's why he feels so bad.
His mother and father may have even separated over the issue of their sons' dead.
The mother tells the priest that there was the divorce (first) followed by "the accident".
It doesn't seem natural even for someone hiding a lot of grief and guilt.
Thing is, he is clearly troubled to a point where he has developped a second persona, "Lukas", who makes him do the bad things. He isn't "just" going through grief and guilt.
Fine, fine, I'll leave! But first I'm going to bother these peanuts! Hmm? Yes? Hmm? HMM?
