"she said it over cable" That's the key. I don't know how old you are, so you might not remember how it was before cable exploded on the scene in the late 70s/early 80s. Cable programming wasn't held to the same standards as broadcast programming, because you paid for it. For example, HBO and other channels were known at the time, for showing movies with the original dialog, including profanity, because if you didn't want to hear it, you didn't have to subscribe.
If this were aired on NBC, and she said, "What the beep?", now
that
would be surprising.
