and she sees that group of schoolgirls come out of the forest on one side of the road, giggling, and cross the road around her and then return to the forest on the other side of the road - was that the suicide forest that was all around them at that point? And were those girls ghosts? Or were they just a group of students visiting the forest at sunset?

i was uncertain about that too. It was a really weird spot for them to be running around in. I wasnt sure if the school girl she saw later had actually been one of those girls post life, or was just the forest using something Sara had already seen to lure her farther in.

It feels like this scene was reshot and added later, which is why it feels out of place and makes little sense. Test audiences were likely wondering why she kept randomly seeing the school-girl apparition in the forest. So they added a scene with a group of school girls non-chalantly wandering through the woods earlier on to tie it together. I suspect this scene may have been added after-the-fact because the editing is such a mess. Protagonist goes from middle of a lonely forest road, then school girls wander out of the bush, then she is suddenly standing right next to a massive hotel.
