Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — The Naked Gun

first off, there's no irony in liam neeson being funny, like there was in airplane with leslie neilson, robert stack, peter graves and lloyd bridges. they were serious in airplane, serious despite the comedy going on around them, like they had been for 20 years during a very, very serious time in movies, the 1950's, that was 20 years before but, by 1980, felt like 100 years. go back 20 years from now and nothing's changed but internet speed and social media. go back to 1992 when neilson became a star and, who cares? it's been modern times since the 1970's, or late 1960's… there's just no irony here.
plus, the naked gun franchise, based on a failed cult comedy series, had petered out. the third movie was awful and they never attempted any more despite the fact that leslie neilson was still working for the same filmmakers on different parodies. but the naked gun franchise, that glued them all together, was simply no longer lucrative…
the original police squad/naked gun was a parody of the ultra-serious police procedural genre, so is this a parody of a parody? how can you parody a parody?
and is this a remake of the first and second movies? a remake of the TV series? an attempt to improve the third movie as if it never happened?
or maybe attempt to start a new franchise so it can peter out like the original classic franchise?
i see that everything is to make money, but there's simply no logic in this.

The Naked Gun was late 80s and movies weren't as serious by then. I was a kid when I saw it and didn't even know the source material they were parodying but it was still funny.

It's not a parody of a parody. It's a parody of the more recent hard boiled action movies that have come out.
So many stories, so little time.
