What a masterful character study. Rylance plays Cromwell with subtle perfection. Measured, intelligent, witty, passionate, menacing, manipulative, cunning, and caring. His progression throughout each episode happens incredibly naturally; his motivations never entirely clear, but always seeming rooted and believable. I thought it was a stunning program all round, but without Rylance's stunning turn it wouldn't be anywhere near as good. Can't wait for another series.

      .
Yes, Rylance was masterful in this. Perfectly nuanced and relatable.
I think Rylance is always this good this happened to be one of the first times an extensive performance of his was captured on screen rather than being on stage.

What I noticed and commented one previously was that Rylance also "listens" well. Some actors sort of go into a trance between lines, like they are rehersing in their head what they are going to say next. But Rylance was reacting appropriately to what the others were doing in the scene rather than disappearing into the background. As another tribute, I watched Bridge of Spies for a half-hour before I realized it was him.

I completely agree. This kind of captivating brilliance is rare in any performance I've ever seen.
