I am someone old enough to have travelled to East Berlin and the USSR in 1987 and also visited West Germany in 1985.
I was/am obsessed with German politics and history.
I am British and well recall the endless reporting of the SS20 and Cruise and Perishing deployment.
The point is well made in the show,even pro NATO people in West Germany knew a war would be fought in Germany and it would be destroyed.
But because the Soviet bloc was deploying SS20s the west had to deploy Perishing and Cruise.
I used to go on peace demonstrations but got fed up meeting people who only worried about the western rockets,so many of the leading lights in CND were either actually communists or were fellow travellers or head in the clouds bible bashers.
So I love that this show shows some in the peace movement were funded and sympathetic to the Soviet bloc.
East Germany used great skill and a lot of money and effort to undermine the resolve of West German military and political might.
I got the impression from the media that the West germans were bad at spying and at catching the Stasi spies because it was easy for the stasi to find out about West German society but East Germany was harder to penetrate,and of course they were all Germans.
The west won the cold war but it seems sometimes that West Germany was an empty shell,so many in Germany were cynical about their military service and the state was full of Stasi spies,they had built great society but lots of people did not believe in it?
I recall trying to talk to peace campaigners in Freiburg in 1985? and they refused to talk to me and my friends because we spoke English and I think they thought we were British soldiers.
Would the German armed forces have put up much of a fight if called to arms in the 1980s?
I liked the series,if you like THE AMERICANS you will like it but it is not very deep.
