I agree that it was scary and intense, yet at the same time it never went "too far".
They did a great balancing job with that.

Well I guess first we'd have to define "recent." But they have a very short rape scene based on what the father saw in his nightmares.
If you watch nearly any season of American Horror Story, you're going to see a brutal rape, far more graphic than what was in his movie. But even if we stick with just movies, I'm assuming you haven't seen The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

Well, I obviously disagree. I generally have a very hard time with rape scenes. While I was uncomfortable with this one, I can name several that make me far more uncomfortable due to the length and brutality.

I saw the girl with the dragon tattoo both the original and the remake and yes that was a graphic rape scene though I never was into American Horror story, what rape scene was there?

Maybe they felt it would be tolerable for a wide audience since it's pretty far from reality i.e. it's a dream in a piece of fiction in a piece of fiction

The original was better, the remake didn't care for it.

There's tons of movies with rape scenes. It's kinda cheap and emotionally manipulative.

Hollyweird is full of these scenes. They love degrading women and making survivors relive their traumatic experiences.

Mysterious Skin(2004) and Boys Don't Cry(1999) had some intense and traumatizing rape scenes as I recall. This movie's rape scene, the one that made it into the final cut as a flashback no less, was tame by comparison.
