An octopus-like humanoid creature who gets nourishment from the minds of others. They're most common in the underdark and interdimensional planes. Sometimes called ghaik or illithids. They reproduce by inserting a parasite tadpole into the eyes of their victims which gradually and painfully takes over the host body over the course of a week.

I just watched the finale last night. It's been ages since I watched season 4, which explains more about how El banished Henry to that other place, but I think I got it all.
The Mind Flayer is an entity/creature that lived on another planet they dubbed The Abyss. It was formless. A mist of those particles you saw the kids throw up when Henry was killed. Vecna literally gave it a form: The Mindflayer. It was sentient, but aimless. He formed a network, both psychic and literal (with those vines he likes). They became a symbiotic lifeform. -
