One of the things that I find so brilliant about this series is the casting. They actually got characters that strongly resemble the real Royal Family. It makes it that much easier to suspend disbelief and follow along.
The acting is also so perfect that I completely buy it. We get to see how Phillip was always a player and why he's so cold and aloof (that always bothered me until I learned to accept that he is consort first, the Queen comes first, he is NOT to be at her side but behind her). What I first interpreted as coldness towards his wife was simply respect and a call of duty.
It also elevated my already high perception of Elizabeth and her maturity and radical acceptance of her job, much like Grace Kelly who just dropped everything and severed ties and transitioned into her role. Different but similar, that's all.
The actor playing Charles is doing a good job demonstrating why he's such an oddball and how the lack of parental affection really contributed to his development as a man and I finally understand why he couldn't handle Diana and preferred Camilla (because she's more of a mother figure, and I think Diana wanted a man not another boy to take care of).

Love this series, and I love the casting. Philip is a bit of a snob and prig.
From everything I have read about him and from many of the documentaries I have seen, I'd say that is pretty much him in a nut shell!
You asked a pretty question; I've given you the ugly answer.
