Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Superman

    Phaenon — 9 months ago(July 05, 2025 07:51 PM)

Just like Superman buckling under the weight of kryptonite, the superhero genre is showing cracks - not from villains or box office bombs, but from audience fatigue. And so, enter James Gunn: the genre’s chaos-loving auteur, now tasked with resuscitating Warner Bros’ DC brand via a bold new vision, a fresh start, a clean cape: Superman 🦸‍♂️
Gunn's reboot doesn’t just sidestep the Snyder-era brooding, it sprints in the opposite direction, arms wide, cape flapping like it’s caught in a Saturday morning breeze. Gone is the tortured, godlike Superman; in his place is a wide-eyed farm boy in a supersuit who says 'Dude' rescues squirrels mid-battle, and genuinely believes kindness is punk rock. Tonally, this isn’t just a pivot; it’s a hard reset, aiming to bring warmth, wit, and wildness back to the Man of Steel.
We open with Superman (David Corenswet) already battered and bruised, crash-landed in the Arctic after a brutal defeat at the hands of the armoured 'Hammer of Boravia'. The world’s most powerful metahuman isn’t just licking his wounds—he’s questioning his place in a world that’s getting louder, meaner, and more complicated by the minute. His only comfort? The Fortress of Solitude, some helpful robot caretakers, and his loyal super-dog, Krypto (adorable chaos incarnate) 🐶
The film wastes no time piling on the players. There’s Lex Luthor (a smug, shiny-headed Nicholas Hoult), orchestrating chaos from a pocket dimension that threatens to rip reality apart. There’s the Justice Gang, a rough prototype of the Justice League featuring Green Lantern Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion, gloriously obnoxious as always), Hawkgirl, Mister Terrific, and eventually Metamorpho, a gooey shapeshifter in an interdimensional prison who wants help rescuing his baby. Yes, really
There’s action. Loads of it. Gleaming CGI, zero-gravity brawls, laser-eyed showdowns, an all-you-can-eat buffet of spectacle. But somewhere amid the interplanetary slugfests and portal-hopping madness, the heart gets lost. Corenswet looks the part, and there’s a likeable softness to his Superman, but between the relentless pacing and a script spread thinner than the Phantom Zone, the character never quite lands
And that's the biggest problem: Superman has all the ambition in the world but barely a moment to breathe. There’s no time to build meaningful connections - neither with Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan), who’s given little beyond her byline and one awkward interview, nor with the public he’s trying to save. Even a detour to Smallville for a heart-to-heart with Ma and Pa Kent barely registers before we’re back to universe-threatening stakes and explosive cutscenes
Gunn, to his credit, hasn’t lost his flair for juggling big casts and gonzo world-building. But unlike Guardians of the Galaxy or The Suicide Squad, this film rarely pauses long enough to land an emotional punch or a joke. Aside from Krypto’s gleeful pouncing, the humour feels more forced than funny, with side characters like Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) and Luthor’s influencer girlfriend Eve (Sara Sampaio) spinning their wheels in half-baked subplots worthy of Filmboard threads.
By the time the film teases appearances from Supergirl, Maxwell Lord, and more future franchise players, it becomes clear: Superman isn’t just a reboot - it’s the launchpad. But instead of focusing on the story in front of us, it’s already sprinting ahead to the next phase of the DC Universe. The result? A movie that looks sharp and moves fast but feels emotionally weightless—less a rebirth than a remix
Sure, diehard DC fans will eat up the lore, the cameos and the deep-cut characters. But for everyone else? Superman is a frenetic, overstuffed ride that tries to soar but forgets to ground itself in the one thing that made the character iconic in the first place: his heart
Tell me I'm wrong after you've seen it

It's got the beginnings of something Df
It's just a lot thrown onto the plate all at once, not everyone like mixed meat dishes
After BvS and Justice League it's asking a lot of fans of cinema
Hardcore comic books fans will it love it but, as most of them are fake, it will go over the heads of casual viewers of a story for fun
There's plenty to like, but it's no

                            .
