New research by Pregnant Then Screwed has revealed that mothers are turning to sex work or pornography as a result of the escalating costs of childcare.
One woman who struggled with childcare costs after attempting to rebuild her life following domestic abuse, has told how she turned to webcam work as it was the only way she could afford childcare and says: “I felt dirty, violated and physically sick performing for perverted men on the internet.”
Anna, who doesn’t want to reveal her identity, says even after progressing in her career and earning more money, the decrease in universal credit meant she was still struggling with childcare costs, until she felt she had no choice but to try escorting.
“I thought webcam work was vile until I tried escorting,” she says. “For complete clarity, when men say ‘escorting’, they mean sex. There were no dinner dates or nice parties. This wasn’t Pretty Woman.
“It was arriving at grotty hotels booked by creepy men twice my age. Cash upfront.”
Anna gave up escorting sex work after two sessions, but continued with webcam work as she says “it didn’t seem so bad anymore after the harsh reality of in-person sex work”.
Anna, who has a five-year-old son, now has a new managerial role and hoped this, coupled with her son starting school, would allow her to give up webcam work for good – but she says she couldn’t have been more wrong.
New research by Pregnant Then Screwed has revealed that mothers are turning to sex work or pornography as a result of the escalating costs of childcare.
The charity, which is demanding an urgent reform of childcare for families, surveyed 11,077 mothers with children under the age of five and 23 mums admitted turning to sex work to pay the bills.
All 23 women are in full or part-time employment and told how they had turned to sex work as a direct result of experiencing financial difficulties exacerbated by the rising cost of childcare.
Two in 10 families who responded to the survey said their childcare costs had risen by at least 11 per cent in the past 10 months. This, together with the rising cost of living, is causing serious challenges for many families.
Anna, who graduated in law from a top London university, described how she became pregnant against her will at the hands of a domestic abuser and was attempting to rebuild her life. However, she says soon after finding the strength to leave her abuser for the sake of her unborn child, she was made redundant from her job as a trainee solicitor when she announced her pregnancy.
“I was at a complete loss for most of my pregnancy and first turned to webcam work when my son was eight-months-old,” she says. “I did this to afford childcare so I could attend college and re-train as it turns out no law firm wanted a single mum as a trainee solicitor.
“Webcam work was never my dream. In fact it was my living nightmare. Although the majority of clients are friendly and complimentary, you do have to have a thick skin with this type of work as there will be those who go to webcam sites to hurl abuse at the women on them or ask you to role play sick scenarios involving incest, rape or children.
“I was in complete disbelief at how far I’d fallen when just a couple of years previously, I’d graduated with a Master of Laws from a top London university.”
“I was absolutely exhausted from having a one-year-old who was still breastfeeding, working a full time job and my webcam job where I was sometimes online until 2am, only to get up at 6.30am the next morning.
“To top it off, I was often left with £100 or less to live on after paying my rent and bills. Even with my additional hours from webcam work, I fell into council tax and utility bill arrears.
“I’m not even ashamed to say that I bunked trains to get into work, stole from supermarkets and often called in sick to work because I couldn’t afford the childcare costs. Most of our food came from food banks. I was working myself to death and still living below the breadline.”
Anna says the escorting was booked by “creepy men, twice my age”, and one was even married. “I thought I’d be nervous or embarrassed, but I was just disgusted with myself and everything about the situation,” she says.
“I have no idea how I managed to go through with the sexual element of the session. The man smelled like he hadn’t showered for weeks and tried refusing to wear a condom.
“I just thought of my son playing happily with his friends in the nursery that he loved and how much it would affect him if we were evicted. I was physically sick after my first escorting experience and immediately blocked all contact with the man. I didn’t ever want to see his face again.
“I felt more violated and worthless than ever knowing I had to sell my body just to keep my son alive and safe. No amount of money was worth this sick feeling.”
Anna gave up escorting permanently after two sessions, but continued with webcam work. Shortly after her son started primary school, she found a new job in a managerial role -

I was just quoting the woman in the article. As the saying goes, "Don't kill the messenger." (A school librarian once said that to me when I was in high school, but that's a story for another thread.)
