Is it correct to say that you are only taxed on the final amount of profit you make on a given stock no matter how many times you buy or sell it during a tax year?

So do the trading floors at investment banks have huge tax bills every year? Or do they just add up all the profit they made off the stock market during a tax year and pay tax off of that?
