Largely thanks to one man, John Gerard, and his 1597 book The Generall Historie of Plantes, much of Great Britain, and later the United States believed that eating tomatoes could be deadly. (Tomatoes contain a not-enough-to-actually-be-toxic amount of a substance called tomatine.) This myth persisted until another man, Robert Johnson, very publicly ate a basket of tomatoes in front of a New Jersey courthouse in 1820. When they didn’t kill him, people had to acknowledge that tomatoes were in fact safe
