In the beginning I would've supported his Fascist movement but Il Duce made many bad moves along the way that cost Italy dearly in the end e.g., his invasion of Greece was just, um, ****ing stupid. Why invade Greece? "Why not?" was basically his answer.
Funny thing is, Mussolini started out as a socialist with progressive ideas, then he betrayed his socialist ideals over the issue of World War I (he wanted Italy to fight, most other socialists were opposed to the war) and started the fascist movement along with some other right-wing idealists, war veterans and Futurists. Fascism was a weird populist mix of aggressive nationalism, protecting the bourgeois and businesses from those pesky workers/socialists and a feigned attempt at collectivism. In the end, Benito tried to return to his socialist roots with the Republic of Salo but it was a 'too late in the ballgame' gesture and the Italian workers wanted nothing to do with him. He and his mistress were brutally executed and hung upside down on meat hooks like gutted pigs by angry Italian partisans.

Yeah, that's probably why they strung him up.

BTW Mussolini eventually passed anti-Jewish laws to appease his friends in Germany. He probably wasn't a bona fide anti-Semite though.
