Has anybody here ever actively nurtured and 'farmed' Monarch butterflies?

We use to do that when we were kids. Take a jar, poke holes in the lid and put grass inside the jar with a caterpillar. It was fun to check up on it every few days. We occasionally got moths, but usually, it was beautiful butterflies.
I showed my son when he was little too.

As they get much older, they lose a lot of that dust anyway. Sometimes their wings are almost transparent, and they can still fly. This isn't something I've read - This is something I've observed over quite a few years. In fact, their wings can be tattered and torn, but they'll go on flying until there's hardly anything left.

There's an indoor butterfly habitat at the natural history museum in my neighbourhood. You bring your orange slices and they land on them (and on you).

Monarchs lay their eggs on swan plants, and the caterpillars eat the plants when the eggs hatch. The adult butterflies love all sorts of flowers. Hebe, lantana and buddleia are their favorites.

Also people don't really like swan plants in their gardens. They're not very pretty, and people like 'pretty'. So, nowhere for the butterflies to lay their eggs.
