    DIY hack: You can make your own Presto logs with discarded junk mail, sawdust and water. The guy in the video is pretty funny, so are some of the comments:

        I don't like them. They emit a weird-smelling smoke. I'd rather use a good, seasoned hardwood like oak or birch. Or even our wonderful Northwest Douglas Fir.

            Oh yeah, my parents used to use those too.
            Good that you have a fireplace, though. Comes in handy during power outages.

              Yes, but when we have snow, it's so cold it doesn't help that much

                Most definitely. The cast iron gets really hot and becomes a good radiator. They still radiate heat for a while even after the fire is out.
                I have a cast iron insert box in my fireplace that serves the same purpose.
