There's a search field (it's always visible on any subreddit, but may move around slightly or look different), and you can flag your search for "only your current subreddit" or all of reddit.
The subreddits themselves are listed along the very top of the page (e.g. All, Politics, Movies, etc), and you can "subscribe" or "unsubscribe" to whichever ones you prefer to change what's shown there. Or just search for / go to any subreddit you want, manually.

So basically everytime a sub-reddit is created the creator needs to out it into a specific category, right?
      That's very good.

It can be annoying when there are multiple subreddits that have similar overlapping purposes.
        /r/football/
        /r/futbol/
        /r/soccer/
        /r/fifa/
        /r/worldcup/
        /r/beautifulgame/
        etc
Those are just a made up example, but you can run into things like that. Usually there's one that's obviously the most popular, though so you can tell that's the one to use.
