      The Hitcher (1986). Not really
      scary
, but I'd say it falls under the horror category.

I don't think I've seen that one. I'm a horror movie fan but there are a few classics I've yet to see. Thanks I'll see if it's on demand.

Make sure you see the incredible original and not the totally lame remake with Sean Bean.

            The original is just meh.
The remake is not much worse.

It's not scary, but Alien is in my top 5 all time favorite movies.

I don't think I've seen that one, but I see Deltoros name tied to it and I love just about anything he touches, especially if it's set in Spain.

Check out the J-Horror 'Pulse' (2001). Not sure if you're familiar with the director but he is the master of the J-Horror scene. Really detached atmospheric tone, slow, quiet, moody and very creepy. Here's the trailer:
He is not coming back. He has forgotten me.

I love plenty of horror films that I wouldn't call scary though:

I did not know it was based upon the same source material as The Thing.
When I think about it, there's a couple of similarities but it's really a different movie.

The first movie changed a couple of things too anyway.
That'll be the next movie I watch.

But the novella takes place on a research station on the South Pole, right?

That it does. Just saying that it takes a couple of liberties and changes things that may or may not be core premises of the novella.
Isolated setting in a snowy landscape.
