Is Gloria Swanson's hands and how effectively she uses. Like when she's staring at Holden from her chair, and her hand is on her knee looking like a talon. Or when she embraces Holden after her suicide attempt and her hands look like a spider web. It's fascinating.

Yes she was simply amazing. I love her performance in this movie. Gloria Swanson was fearless in this character.

Joe even comments on them. Especially when Norma puts her cigarette in the weird holder and he describes them as "claws".

Yes!! I notice her hands and how much she incorporates them into her performance. For me the most noticeable scene with her hands is when he is saying to her "how do you know I don't have a girl I'm crazy about" and the hand holding her cigarette totally curls up when she says "WHAT girl?" Wow. Awesome.

Or when she describes Salome kissing the severed head of John The Baptist.

Also when she and Joe are watching her silent movie ("Queen Kelly", a real-life Swanson-Von Stroheim collaboration) and she stands up shouting about being on the screen again.

The movement of the eyes and the hands were the silent star's main form of expression. Although the horror host Vampira didn't move her hands much, I think the claw like hands Vampira used were inspired by Gloria Swanson in this movie.

She certainly knew how to use body language as an extension of her acting.
So many stories, so little time.
