I think it's probably my favorite scene from the whole movie. Beginning with the toes peeking out in the sand, it's about 90 seconds long, maybe, and it's got the sunny, carefree John Williams music playing, and everybody is having such a pleasant time. It really has nothing to do with the movie, and there are a few people who might find the scene unnecessary, but it's just such a
nice
moment. It's weird to think it came from this movie, but this scene captures a happy summer day at the beach like very few movies ever have.
Anybody else feel the same way?

I see it as a kind of tribute to Spielberg's beach setup before Alex Kintner buys it. Like you said, a nice touchand it was a real set up, kind of, because the large school of fish came along to trigger Brody's pent-up shark anxiety

I've always thought it was an homage to the scene of the tourists arriving for the 4th of July. The track on the Jaws album is called 'Promenade (Tourists on the Menu)', and the music for the beach scene in Jaws 2 is titled 'The Menu'.
I love the cut to those feet after Brody says "by tomorrow night, and I mean it." -

Except that the day little Alex buys it, it's grey and overcast and gloomy. The day Brody shoots up the damn place is sunny and bright and delightful!
