I am having severe doubts about staying here. It seems all most users want to do is attack or ignore anyone who is sincerely considering contributing.

Different people have different preferences for the content they are comfortable with so we mostly leave those decisions up to the individual users. There are options to block posters, threads, and in your profile you can even block specific words or phrases you don't wish to see.
